Screen Ireland’s Frameworks short animated film scheme is open for applications

Screen Ireland’s Frameworks is an initiative for the support of short animation filmmaking.

It is a flagship scheme for the Irish animation sector which has produced global award-winning films to a consistently high standard.

Projects selected for funding will combine creative exploration with an ability to appeal to a general audience: however, please note this is not a scheme aimed at children.

The scheme is co-funded by Screen Ireland and RTÉ.

Films may be made in English or Irish (if produced in the Irish language subtitling will be necessary for festivals and sales worldwide)

The Frameworks application deadline is 1pm Friday 26th February 2021.

Projects of maximum 2 minute duration

2 x 2 minute films at €20,000 – This scheme seeks high-quality, concise, imaginative story-telling to be delivered by applicants wishing to make an impact on the domestic and international stage.

The films will be strictly no more than 2 minutes in duration requiring efficient and effective visual narratives.

Applicants with excellent proposals who are deemed to require assistance in specific areas of expertise will be assisted by Screen Skills Ireland with mentor support, however although a 2 minute scheme it is emphatically for professionals already working in the animation industry and not a training scheme.

Projects of maximum 5 minutes duration

2 x 5 minute films for budgets of between €50,000 to €70,000 – Applicants should demonstrate previous experience in delivering high-end, top quality animation films. The film should showcase the director and creative team’s outstanding talent and experience and be of a story-telling and visual standard capable of attracting world-wide festivals and distribution.

Applicants must apply as part of an established studio.

The studio must be able to demonstrate a proven track record in the successful development and production of animation projects which have been screened for Irish and international audiences.

Priority will be given to applicants who apply with the support of an established studio in order to deliver their film to the specification, budget and quality that this level of scheme demands.

All Frameworks projects are selected with an expectation of achieving international success, and this particularly applies to the higher budget films. Examples of successful films from previous rounds include Late Afternoon (Cartoon Saloon), Second to None (Caboom), The Missing Scarf (Belly Creative), Coda (And Maps And Plans), The Boy in the Bubble (Igloo), Granny O’Grimm (Brown Bag), Badly Drawn Roy (Jam Media) and Irish Folk Furniture (Mayfly Films) amongst others.
