Nora was also awarded the Women in Animation Diversity Award at the Spark festival in Vancouver in late October. The Award was established to “celebrate outstanding contributions to diversity and inclusion in the animation industry”. In total, there are 3 Diversity Awards – for an organisation, for an individual and for a film.
Varity said in their review “this powerful Afghanistan-set animated film serves as an appeal for women’s rights and a celebration of the creative spirit…’The Breadwinner proves nothing short of exceptional, celebrating as it does a young woman who faces adversity head-on.’
A powerful and riveting story of self-empowerment and imagination in the face of oppression, The Breadwinner boasts the breath-taking hand-drawn animation that has made Cartoon Saloon one of the worlds most well-loved and respected animation studios.
The film explores the world of Parvana, a young girl living under the Taliban regime, who cuts her hair and disguises herself as a boy in order to provide for her family after her father is imprisoned.
An official Ireland-Canada-Luxembourg co-production, THE BREADWINNER is being produced with the participation of the Irish Film Board, Telefilm Canada & The Film Fund, Film Fund Luxembourg, The Harold Greenberg Fund, Shaw Rocket Fund, the Ontario Media Development Corporation and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland along with Gaia Entertainment and the Artemis Rising Foundation.
