Whackala is a creatives-led boutique studio focusing on original IP development, unique concepts and nimble production and co-production.
The company was set up by Paul McGrath and Leticia Agudo to combine their talents in producing and directing fiction, documentary and animation. They first made documentaries that incorporated scripted content and animation, and which garnered awards at international festivals and competitions. Bobby Moloney joined Whackala in 2015. Since then, they have focused on animation and live-action.
They have just finished their first animation series, THE GRUMPY ONION with RTÉ Kids, Screen Ireland and Coimisiún na Méan. Before, they made the multi-award winning animation short for adults LADY BETTY (Screen Ireland/RTÉ), and the animation shorts THE CARETAKER and THE LAST WRANGLER, both for RTÉJr. Their live-action short #NANAROCKS won Best Family-Friendly film at the Magnolia Film Festival in 2023. They have two live-action features in development, one in receipt of Screen Ireland development funding, and a comedy-drama series.
