The Breadwinner continues its awards season success; landing a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. In what marks another great year for Irish talent on the international stage, Saoirse Ronan received a Best Actress nod for her role in Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, marking the actress’s Golden Globe nomination, while Martin McDonagh’s Three Billlboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is in contention for Best Motion Picture, Drama. Daniel Day-Lewis received a nomination for Best Actor (Drama) for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread alongside Irish actress Catriona Balfe, who is up for a Best Actress (TV) accolade for Outlander.
Speaking about the nominations, James Hickey, IFB Chief Executive said: “On behalf of the IFB, I would like to extend our warmest congratulations to the team at Cartoon Saloon and particularly Nora on the Golden Globe nomination. The Breadwinner is such a timely, beautiful and heartfelt film and we are thrilled to see it receiving the global recognition it deserves.
“We would also like to congratulate Saoirse, Martin, Daniel and Catriona on their respective nominations, in what marks another indelible milestone for the Irish film industry.”
The Breadwinner tells the story of eleven-year-old Parvana, who gives up her identity to provide for her family and to try to save her father’s life. A story of self-empowerment and imagination in the face of oppression, the film also celebrates the culture, history and beauty of Afghanistan with a cast that includes many performers of Afghan descent.
The title also recently scored ten Annie Award nominations, including nods for Best Director and Best Independent Animation, after having won Best Animation at the LA Film Critics Association Awards as well as scooping Best Animated Feature at the Toronto Film Critics Association Awards last weekend.
The Breadwinner is produced by Paul Young of Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon (Song of the Sea, The Secret of Kells) alongside Canada’s Aircraft Pictures, and Luxembourg’s Melusine Productions and Angelina Jolie serves as the title’s executive producer. The Breadwinner was developed with support from Telefilm Canada, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, the Film Fund Luxembourg, Corus Entertainment, the Harold Greenberg Fund and the Belinda Stronach Foundation.
The 75th Golden Globes will take place on 7 January, 2018 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
