Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon is a four time Academy Award®, Golden Globe®, BAFTA and Emmy nominated animation studio formed by Paul Young, Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey in 1999. From award-winning shorts to feature films and TV series, Cartoon Saloon has carved a special place in the international Animation industry.

In 2010 the studio’s first feature film, “The Secret of Kells”, was nominated for an Academy Award® and in 2015 Tomm Moore’s follow up feature, “Song of the Sea”, garnered Moore a second Oscar® Nomination and a first nomination for Producer Paul Young.

Golden Globe® and Academy Award® nominated “The Breadwinner” was released in the US and Canada in November 2017 to huge critical acclaim. Directed by Cartoon Saloon’s Nora Twomey, it is based on the internationally acclaimed young adult novel of the same name by Canadian author Deborah Ellis. It was co-produced with Canada’s Aircraft Pictures, Luxembourg’s Melusine Productions and in association with Jolie Pas Productions.

Academy Award® nominated “Late Afternoon” is a short animated film written and directed by Louise Bagnall and produced by Nuria González Blanco. Late Afternoon won Best Animated Short at Tribeca Film Festival 2018 and has screened at more than 80 festivals worldwide. The film was shortlisted for the Best Animation Short category at the 2019 Oscars.

Their Emmy nominated preschool series, Puffin Rock, is currently being broadcast worldwide on Netflix in over 25 languages and on Tencent streaming service where it is close to 100 million views in China alone.

“Dorg Van Dango” is the latest production from Cartoon Saloon, a comedy tv series for 6-11 year olds co-created by Nora Twomey (Song of the Sea, Moone Boy) and Fabian Erlinghäuser (The Breadwinner, The Secret of Kells). Based on an original idea by Fabian Erlinghäuser (Song of the Sea, Moone Boy) and Nora Twomey (The Breadwinner, The Secret of Kells), Dorg Van Dango is developed and produced with assistance from Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and Creative Europe. Cartoon Saloon handles design, writing, storyboards and post-production as well as distribution in Ireland and the UK, and WildBrain handles voice records, writing, character and background builds, animation, and distribution rest-of-world.

Cartoon Saloon are currently working on a development slate of their own work and in production of a number of projects including a Puffin Rock movie, tv series Viking Skool and Tomm Moore’s 3rd feature “Wolfwalkers”, which is due for release late 2020.
